A Personal Ethics Reflection

A Personal Ethics ReflectionIt appears that my ethical framework may be whatsoeverwhat eclectic. N one(a)theless, having happened to read the articles on Deontology and Utilitarianism (Kay, 1997 Deontological Ethics, 2008), I sustain come to the conclusion that my ethical framework largely revolves around the duty aspect of Deontology. Up to this point, I was unable to put a name to my ethical beliefs/value system. I knew for sure though that my values were strongly based on my experiences as a messiahian. I strongly believe that rules are meant to be kept- non broken as is the commonly heard expression. For me, life consists of a set of rules and duties-typical of a Deontologist. . I believe strongly that ones duty is strongly stipulated by Christ for example, the Great Commission, and the living a righteous life that is pleasing to God. Here is an example recently I was to complete some readings for one of my courses but I was unable to do wholly the readings as I had previous ly made plans to attend a function at church. When I attended the class, I considered the hap of being questioned directly about one of the articles that I had non read. Knowing that lying was not an option, I would convey (as is my moral duty) had to tell my reader that I had been unable to complete that particular reading. Had my moral principles revolved largely around Utilitarianism and Consequentialism, I would have told a lie because it would have prevented me from being suspended from the seminar which would have affected my attendance percentage Thus at the end of the day, my ethical principles are incorporated with the whole idea of the Trinity residing in me.Now one may argue that it would be different if I had a family member who was a homosexual or committed homosexual acts. I concur, it would be different. In fact, I would be more emotionally and spiritually invested which would be the precursor to more intense prayer and fasting for that loved one. My leger points me to the availing power of the wakeless and fervent prayer of the righteous (James 5 pen 16). Therefore, based on the fact that I would hate to see my loved one sent to hell, I would be on my knees praying for that persons deliverance. As I noted before, on that point is a mixture of duties and consequence. I have my Christian duties that if not fulfilled have enceinte consequences for my soul. Additionally, I have as a new man in Christ an understanding of Gods specific commands, so it does not matter who the person is that is, there is no agent-relativity.Within my ethical framework, I think my primary ethical principle revolves around the concept of Doing unto others as you would have them do unto you. Within this principle, some of the rules that I subscribe to relate to a passage of Biblical scripture that require Christians to avoid judging and condemning others whilst ensuring that they are merciful and forgiving (St. Luke 6 verse 36-37, King James Version). The idea of avoiding judgement and condemnation does not imply that one is to accept or encourage an act that is not of God. The Bible gives specific guidelines as to what activities are condoned and prohibited. Thus, it is my duty to uphold the Christian laws and bring the Word to a non-Christian (St. Matthew 28 verse 18-20). Therefore, the principle regarding judgement and condemnation does not conflict with the stance I took with homosexuality (Romans 1 verse 24-32 2 Corinthians 6 verse 8 2 Thessalonians 3 verse 6).I testament give a further example of the principle regarding judgement and condemnation. I have recently found myself in a quandary whilst interacting with persons who are not Christians. The most recent example was whilst interacting with a lecturer in class about Professor Stephen Hawkings most recent theory on the grounding of the universe. My lecturer became instantaneously excited once Professor Hawkings name was mentioned. In fact, he proceeded to declare how awesome Pro fessor Hawking was in his ability to explain the creation of the universe without acknowledging the presence of a supernatural force. Of course I thought this was absolute blasphemy and pitied my lecturer for what appeared to be atheism and his sure eternal damnation. It was not until after the class that I was sent back to my principle and rules about judging others. I was reminded that it is not my duty to decide on my lecturers fate though I am required to be a witness.In my estimation, ethics is a convoluted concept that requires much emotional, spiritual and cognitive investment. I as well believe that the formation of my ethical principles has gone through and will go through several revolutions. The revolutions I forsee involve a strengthening of my present beliefs. Of course, it is expect that future exposure will likely hone the way in which I presently express my beliefs and so I will possibly occasion more tactful whilst voicing my principles. My ethical principles have been formed due to life experiences. When I was much younger, my principles were probably more a function of fearing the blast (consequences) versus what was my inherent DUTY. With age, emotional, cognitive and spiritual maturity, I have progressed from a more concretized way of accepting principles. The Bible speaks to allowing God to reveal Himself to us (1 Corinthians 2 verse 9-14 Life Application Study Bible, 1991) and in questioning certain things ranging from the presence and development of God to the importance of Gods grace the Lord has proven Himself to me as a being who is worthy of my praise. Thus, I believe the fundamental framework, principles and rules that I subscribe to will remain with me until death.I also recognize that my beliefs and values transcend all areas of my life. Thus, whereas some persons subscribe to the law of the land as the highest form of power the laws of my creator supersede all others. Therefore, within my professional and personal life, the T rinity reigns overbearing and will continue to influence the way in which I define my ethics. Second Timothy 4 verse 16-17 notes ALL scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and instruct in righteousness so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work (Life Application Study Bible, 1991).

Sports Day - Personal Narrative Essay -- Papers

Sports Day - Personal Narrative That afternoon was no different, it would seem, to any other. The lessons were dull and lifeless with the same dry teacher droning on rough the same old rubbish. However, as we sat listening to the monotonous speech a small, sweet glimmer of hope lay wide awake can our hot, tired faade. Sports day was coming. Our restlessness would soon be relieved. The small group of teachers who knew how to push passion into their lessons could sense the excitement. They were using the events to get out of teaching for the afternoon and they lazily let the class enjoy the TV. We watched Chicken Run although I could barely concentrate. How could I? We were in year 6 at the top of the schools pecking order and were ready to proudly show off the results of our long, hard training in the schools annual sports day. Josh was just as excited as me, we were both contending in the same race, and we were both very competitive. We both raced o ff as soon as the bell rang out its echoing toll. I was f...

Free Things They Carried Essays: Syntactic and Paratactic Interpretation :: Things They Carried Essays

Syntactic and Paratactic Interpretation of The Things They Carried The syntactical and paratactic styles of interpretation are both needed to interpret Tim OBriens The Things They Carried. The syntactic aspect of interpretation deals with the imaginary or the things that arent said, but that are implied or that happen break throughside of what is said. Paratactic interpretation deals with the concrete details that stand out and are specifically stated. The media, although it didnt change the outcome of the fight much because it provided coverage of both negative and positive aspects, it was the first war to be cover by the media and therefore what it did cover, people believed. This can be observed in Tim OBriens novel on the coverage of how the war started and how it was covered after the war started. The historical approach to this novel with respect to the syntactic aspect can be observed if one looks at what the media said had started the war. The media stated that the war had been started because U.S. ships had been discharged upon in friendly waters by hostile warships. Paratacticly this makes sense and should have started a war in which we sent over troops that felt that they were protect their country, which might have actually changed the outcome of the war. Syntactically, though, the story was that we had been in two previous tiffs (Cuba and Laos) and had lost. This caused the president to be looked at in an unfavorable light, which made him and others in power, to stage a war that he thought we could win. In reality there were no known hostile ships anywhere near the area that our ships went round off and he was blindly following a belief that communism should be contained in order not to have a domino effect. The media later portray this portrait of the war, but it was too late for many young teenagers that had just gotten out of high school. Another example of syntactic analysis is where the media reported a death count. Paratactically th e death count represented the number of bodies dead, but this is misleading. The death count, for one thing, is misleading because the entire country was covered with mines and these explosives killed both friend and foe. later they had gone off, there was little left of the body. This leads to miscounting because if the body is blown into microscopic pieces it is hard to tell if one, two, or three people died, and whos side they were on.

The Ju-Wasi Experience :: essays research papers

My visit to the Ju/wasi area of Botswana was an eye-opening experience. At first sight, I could non believe they lead an able way of life. The entire society is built around waterholes, and they herd cattle. The idea of a modern village or townspeople does not exist. They do not process their food, and their water is very scarce and unsanitary. Nevertheless, the living conditions of the Ju/wasi rarely inflict any diseases upon them. Rather, it is the Western world that has brought in viruses and bacterium that affect the health of the Ju/wasi the most. Out of all the noticeable problems that afflict the Ju/wasi, however, this was the least visible. The lack of organization among tribesmen, a constant food staple, and a stable sparing manakin are the issues the Botswana government needs to address. In this regard, I agree almost fully with the previous panel that suggested improvements in several of the rudimentary areas. first-class honours degree and foremost, organization is key. The government needs to help the Ju/wasi build several villages. This will bring an element of government into the tribe, which will help the Ju/wasi make central decisions intimately the tribes actions. Digging the wells is not essential because a water supply already exists yet it fits in well with the overall political program of improving the Ju/wasi living conditions. In order to provide a constant staple, the government need not distribute domesticated animals. Instead, they should institute an economic model and integrate tribesmen with Botswanas job market. The Ju/wasi can then use their new income to finance a food supply or a cash crop. The key is to spend money as efficiently as possible in order to help the Ju/wasi, and my slightly modified plan accomplishes that purpose.Following these guidelines does not promise the Ju/wasi a carefree life.

Dual Executive :: essays research papers

Dual Executive/PresidentThe idea of an elective head of state for the American chief executive,in its conception, was or so without precedent. The idea of an American dualpresidency, split between domestic and foreign arenas is itself withoutprecedent. A dual presidency would suit America well due to the pressures ofthe mightiness of President of the United States. As Commander-in-Chief, thePresident bears incredible pressures and responsibilities. The President notonly has power in the United States, provided also tremendous bow throughoutthe world. It is not arrogant to change the presidency in order to manageAmericas vast interests all over the globe. The US is certainly not isolationistic anymore, so creating an office for a foreign affairs executive issimply realistic. Thus, the President is not only torn between domestic andforeign responsibilities, but s/he must find time to campaign. A dual presidencywith a domestic and foreign leader could divide these campaigning dutie s. Inaddition, a dual presidency is better adapted to handle simultaneous crises. Adual presidency is a modern day answer to the realities of the Americanpresidency.Essentially, the idea of a dual executive is rooted in the concept of aplural executive. Back in the time of the writing of the Constitution, someanti-federalists precious a weak executive. This weak executive was called aplural executive or an executive council. (Storing 49) The purpose of such aplural executive was not only to weaken the executive, but also to prevent amonarchy from ruling. In fact, an anti-federalist named Randolph opposed anexecutive-of-one so much that he believed it to be the foetus (fetus) of themonarchy.(Storing 93) Yet straight off the threat of monarchy is laughable.The proposed dual executive has no intentions of weakening that branch.Rather, a dual executive makes the branch more efficient, focused, and in touch.Plural is not a fitting circumstance for the dual executive. This is because ap lural executive implies several office holders, or a committee. The more people,the more chaos and disunity occurs.In the 70th chapter of The Federalist Papers, Alexander Hamilton do acase for an executive with a great deal of unity. If power was concentrated in asingle chief magistrate, then the branch would be more cohesive. Hamiltonrelied on the failures of plural executive in the history of Rome and Greece tomake a case against executive councils.Some may argue that by dividing the executive office, it saps the energyand vigor required of the job. Inversely, it can be argued that the Presidenthas so much to do that his energy is weakened by simply world spread too thin.

Unions :: essays research papers

The union movement of the late 19th century by Eli Hatch During 1870 through and through 1900 excogitateers joined together responding to the power of their employers caused by the growth of industrialization. The worker did not always have the luxury of leaving after eight hours of work, the right to representation, or the even the right to work in a safe environment. The working people of nineteenth century America had to unite in struggle to light upon the gains that are often taken selfishly and taken for granted today. There were many successes and failures in organized labor the successes were often obtained through the loss of the worker, often through lost charters, jobs, or even death. The organization structure of the union during 1870 through 1900 went through different cycles and strategies to achieve what they wanted. One of the first effective regional organized unions was the Knights of Labor formed in 1869. The knights took in not only skilled workers but also an y worker that could be truly categorise as a producer. The knights took their peek in 1885 when strikes against Union Pacific, Southwest System, and Wabash railroads attracted public sympathy and succeeded in preventing a reduction in wages, at this time they boasted a membership of 700,000. 1886 was a troubled year for labor relations. There were nearly 1,600 strikes involving 600,000 workers, with the eight-hour day being the important item for all of the strikes. Failure of some of the strikes and sexual conflicts between the skilled workers and the unskilled led to a decline in the Knights popularity and influence. An another(prenominal) organization called the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions created a constitution that other unions could adhere to. This constitution met in Pittsburgh on Nov. 15 1881 and was created by representatives of the cigar makers, the printers, the merchant seamen, steel workers, carpenters and local units of the Knights of Labor. One o f the most important items in the constitution created by the FOTLU recommended that the legal eight-hour work day be an objective for every union to achieve. The FOTLU thus accelerated a strong national push for a shorter work week. The AFL grew from 140,000 in 1886 to nearly on million by 1900. With these strengths in numbers they often preferred striking over political action. The struggle for workers rights, wage increases and protests against wage cuts were often unsuccessful resulting in violence and death.
